This “Blessed,” one “…DELIGHTS in the Law of the Lord and IN IT he MEDITATES, DAY AND NIGHT.” -{Psalm 1:2}
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO “DELIGHT?” The word means to “Take pleasure or find enjoyment in. To experience emotional delight. A high degree of satisfaction…is an attitude that leads to action.”
The word is used in Genesis 34:19 and Esther 2:14 to speak of a man who “delights” in a woman. He does not “have to” spend time with her. He wants to! He desires to be with her and delights in her. He is focused, single-hearted. She has captured his attention and he loves her! She causes great “delight” in his heart. Think of a young man who finds such a one. He thinks about her, wants to be with her, prioritizes his life around her. He is be-spotted. He thinks about her, desires to be with her and in her company he is comfortable, at ease. He enjoys being with her. Enjoying her companionship. The fact she is by his side brings great contentment, joy, pleasure, experiencing emotional “delight!” This is not a “duty” for him to be with her, or to think about her, but a “delight!” The Psalmist, “delights” in the Word of the LORD, and the proof, is he “meditates,” on it day and night. Anytime is God time!
It is not a duty but a “delight!” Others in Psalm 1 delight in different things, the advice of the ungodly, the ways of sinners, the companionship of scoffers, but not so “the one who is “Blessed,” he or she goes in a different direction, they go in God’s way, listening to God’s counsel, delighting in it, mediating upon it, because it is God’s!
The word “delight” is also used of The Queen of Sheba when she spoke to Solomon, about God delighting in him. “How blessed are your men, how blessed are these your servants who stand before you continually and hear your wisdom. Blessed be the Lord your God who delighted in you to set you on the throne of Israel; because the Lord loved Israel forever, therefore He made you king, to do justice and righteousness.”-{1 Kings 10:8-9}.
The “Blessed” one desires the Word, he finds joy in it, satisfaction, emotional pleasure. He brings his mind back again and again to it. He loves to think on the Word, ponder it, and speak to himself about it, because of Whose Word it is, what it says, means, and how to apply it! For in the Word, it reveals the God of the Word, His heart, His thoughts, His character, His precious and magnificent promises. Oh what “delight” there is in HIM and His Word! You don’t have to carry a Bible with you, but if you have been in the Word and carry the verse in your mind then anywhere anytime you can think on it. The Holy Spirit can recall it to you to feed your soul upon! His Word is a lamp onto our feet and a light onto our path! His Word, “delights” the heart. “Your words were found and I ate them, And Your Words became for me a joy and the delight of my heart;For I have been called by Your Name, O Lord God of hosts.” – {Jeremiah 15:16}. The Psalmist said, “Make me walk in the path of Your commandments, For I delight in it.”-{Psalm 119:35}. It is used of God and the same Hebrew word is translated “pleases,” He derives pleasure, delight, pleasing to Him, satisfying. “But our God is in the heavens; He does whatever He pleases.“-{Psalm 115:3}. “But the Lord was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief;If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring,He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand.”-{Isaiah 53:10}. Remember, the word “DELIGHT,” means to “take pleasure or find enjoyment in. To experience emotional delight. A high degree of satisfaction…is an attitude that leads to action.” This “Day and Night,”… This is a poetic device that communicates that this is constantly taking place. Just as night and day are different, two extremes…you see the picture that whatever time it is, delighting and meditating is taking place, it is constant, it is consistently happening, the “Blessed” person does this, it is who they are on the inside, pondering the greatness of the LORD and His promises, His ways, will, perspective as revealed in the Treasure of His Word that reveals God Himself to us. Pondering His truth, to see what applications we need to make to our own life so we may align with Him and follow Him not out of dread but delight and appreciation for Who He is and how he has blessed us! Communing with Him by His Spirit through prayer and His Word, feeding and nourishing our mind and soul
YOUR RESPONSIBILITY- is to pursue the LORD in His Word, familiarizing yourselves with Him, His mind, His heart, hiding it in your heart and speaking the truth to yourself, going over what it says in your mind. Letting the Holy Spirit renew your mind, conforming you to the image of Christ, shaping your thinking and character, aligning yourself up with God’s thoughts, ways, wisdom, to guide you, what it means and how it applies, and to know Him better! Coming to the Word intentionally…to look for Him,reveal to you Himself -The LORD whose Word it is! Scripture says, “If you search for Me with all of your heart you will find Me…He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him…Beginning with Moses and the prophets He revealed Himself in all the Scriptures…that I may know Him…” The Holy Spirit will teach and reveal Truth to you! -{Read Jer 29:13;Heb 11:6; Luke 24:27}.
WARNING! The Word was a “Delight” to the “blessed” person of verse 1 who was known for what he DID NOT DO…he did not walk in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit with mockers. He had discernment and to do otherwise will cause a distaste and disdain rather than a “delight” in the Word of God! Mind your companionship’s and influences, for they can influence and shape your thinking,and character, take heed,”Do not be misled: “Bad company corrupts good character.” -{1 Corinthians 15:33}. As you choose His way in His Word it has an effect on your spiritual appetite for good!
THE RESULTS – will be spiritual discernment and delight in the doing of God’s Word out of love and reverence for Him.
