The Psalmist’s Relationship with the Word of God…
Did you know Psalm 119 is the longest chapter in the Word of God? It has 176 verses and approximately 171 of those verses refer to Scripture! The chapter is all about the Word of God and never separated from the God of the Word!
The Psalmist was going through deep troubles, and “afflictions.” People had lied about him-{ v69}; persecuted him-{v 84, 161}; and oppressed him exceedingly so.- {v121}. He had “many adversaries“-{v 157}. And yet we see in the midst of great troubles, pressures instead of turning from the LORD he heads to the Word of God as his source and resource for his trials.
When pressure comes where and whom we run to reveals a lot about us… to us… who we trust!
The Psalmist tells us where and who to turn to, and what he found in the midst of great afflictions and reveals his attitude and feelings.
Note his response concerning God’s Word.
He…
- Delighted in God’s Word – “ If Your Law had not been my delight, Then I would have perished in my misery.” -v 92, 70
- Loved God’s Word – “How I love Your Law! It is my meditation all the day.”- v 97, 47-48, 136
- Meditated on God’s Word – “…It is my meditation all the day.”- v97, 48.Psalm 1:2.
- Thankful for God’s Word – “I rise at midnight to thank You for Your righteous judgments.”- v 62
- Obedient to God’s Word – ” Therefore I love Your commandments Above gold, yes, above pure gold. Therefore I carefully follow all Your precepts concerning everything, I hate every false way.”- v 127,128
His relationship with God through His Word in times of affliction and suffering and how it ministered to him and gave him a true view of life. In the midst of afflictions, he kept Relying heavily on the Word of God Relating all to the God whose Word it was!
May God help you and me in times of testing to Turn to Him and His Word and find what the Psalmist found, God Himself speaking through His Word to us and encouraging our hearts to Delight, Love, Meditate, Be Thankful, and Obedient…
