“Open my eyes that I might see wonderful things from Your Law.”– {Psalm 119:8}
What potential there is for you from this verse. What encouragement for you to draw from when you come to His Word. What hope, expectancy to receive from God when you come to His Word! Note, There are “Wonderful things” to be discovered and found for you from His Word. To come to God with expectancy that He will show you “Wonderful things” from His Word! Often a child at Christmas, has expectations, dreams, “hope’s” and sometimes on awakening Christmas morn may run down stairs, opening the door and to see under the Christmas tree what gifts are there! Sometimes there are, sometimes there are not, but often the sense of expectation is what the child lives on. But unfortunately, not every child’s expectation is realized for various reasons, and “hope’s” more like “wishes” are dashed and disappointment’s ensue. But not with God. His promises are true. His character is trustworthy. What He promises He delivers on. One way He has chosen to reveal Himself is through His Word. {Read Psalm 19:7-11} And so the Psalmist comes to God with the prayer of dependency, dependent upon The Lord to do what neither he nor anyone else can do, spiritually “see, understand” apart from Divine enablement, illumination! What potential for you, every time you come to His Word! God desires, delights and does illumine His Word, Himself to you, through His Word! Take HOPE IN Him!
Note; The Psalmist…
1.- Prayer of DEPENDENCY.
Asking God to open his eyes. Not physical but spiritual eyes. As human sight enable us to see things, people, colors, delights, dangers, so we need “the eyes of our heart” opened to see spiritually from His Word.
“We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, BUT in words taught by the SPIRIT, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words. The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned…”-{1 Cor 2:12-15}. Two types of people in this passage, “the natural man”- who cannot understand spiritual things, indeed they are “foolishness” to them! And the person with the “Spirit of God,” within them, whom He teaches and the ability to understand and discern!
2. -PRAYER FOR ENLIGHTENMENT;
“Open my eyes that I might SEE…”
The Psalmist knows he is dependent upon God to do what only He can do, and so to Him he appeals. He comes to SCRIPTURE NOT to complete some “to do list,” but to SEE, to understand, to know intimately, personally, not second hand knowledge but personally knowing! Upon His resurrection, Jesus came and walked with two despondent followers and we read,”And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.“- {Luke 24:27}… “Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures,…”-{Luke 24:45}. He did this and they were transformed! Paul prayed for the believers, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which He has called you, the riches of His glorious inheritance in His holy people, and His incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength He exerted when He raised Christ from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly realms.”- {Eph 1;18-20}. He prays they would KNOW what He has given them, “HOPE… RICHES…INHERITANCE…POWER…”
3. THE PRAYER IS SPECIFIC;
“… Might see WONDERFUL Things.” Oh, he comes that he might “see,” as someone who digs for gold and comes upon a mine laid with it, all its brilliance, beauty, and riches, more so, he asks for that which is greater than natural passing riches, but that which is of eternal worth! “Wonderful things,” such as…
HIS NAME IS – WONDERFUL
Judges 13:18 – ” But the angel of the LORD said to him, ‘Why do you ask my name, seeing it is wonderful?’”
HIS WORD IS – WONDERFUL
Psalm 119:128 – “Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul observes them.”
HIS WORKS Are – WONDERFUL
Psalm 96:3 – “Tell of His glory among the nations, His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.”
HIS COUNSEL IS – WONDERFUL
Isaiah 28:29 – “This also comes from the LORD of hosts, who has made His counsel wonderful and His wisdom great.”
HIS SALVATION IS – WONDERFUL
1 Peter 2:9 – “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.”
HE IS – WONDERFUL
Isaiah 9:6 – “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us; And the government will rest on His shoulders; and His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.“
And so much more “Wonderful” transforming truths are to be found in His Word!
4.- HIS WORD, “THE FIELD” TO GLEAN “Wonderful things” from.
We must depend upon His Spirit to illumine His Word to us, and thank God He does! The word, “Law” as used in this verse means ” Instruction,”… “Teaching.” God has much to instruct and teach us, and so we come to Him with a teachable, submissive heart, and His means to instruct, teach, is His Word. – {Read Psalm 19:7-11 and make note of The Attribute’s of His Word!}
- His Word is Truth -{Read John 17:17}
- His Word is Transforming – {Read Rom 12:2; Acts 20:32; 2 Tim 3;15-17}
- His Word is Trustworthy – { Read Psalm 19:7; 33:4}
- His Word is Testifying to Jesus Christ- {Read Luke 24:27}
- PRAY THIS VERSE FOR YOURSELF – BEFORE YOU READ HIS WORD.
- PRAY THIS SCRIPTURE FOR OTHERS. Can you think of Some others this moment whom you can pray this for. Instead of the word, “my” and “I” put in the person’s name you are praying for. For example…”Mary… John… Noah.. Evan… Cindee… Calum… Julia-Grace,… Shelby… Romans… Alf… Warren…” These are just examples of how to pray specifically for someone using the Scriptures to form your thinking, and SPECIFIC request!
- You have your own sphere of people whom you can pray specifically for. Throughout the day, you can lift up a person using this verse to pray for them. What a gift from God to allow you and me access to Him to Pray for others!
Be Encouraged… Pray… To …See… Pray… For… Others!
“Open my eyes that I might see wonderful things from Your Law.”– {Psalm 119:8}.
