When David was confronted by the prophet over his sin of Bathsheba and having her husband killed, he went to the root of the problem when he said, “Why did you DESPISE THE WORD OF THE LORD by doing what is evil in His eyes? You struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword and took his wife to be your own. You killed him with the sword of the Ammonites.”-{2 Sam 12:9}.

And to “DESPISE the Word of the LORD,” we see in verse 14 is…”…by doing this you have shown UTTER CONTEMPT for the LORD,”

The word “DESPISE” means to consider “worthless, regard with contempt.”- {Strongs Concordance}.” {baza/bazah} “… is to treat something as insignificant, worthless, to hold in contempt! This is what the prophet said was David’s view of the Word of God as evident in his committing, “… doing what is evil in His eyes.”

“DESPISE – “Bazah” means to TREAT THINGS… OF… VALUE with contempt, as if they were worthless, ”

TWO WAYS WE DESPISE, SHOW CONTEMPT FOR THE WORD OF GOD;

1. – DISOBEY THE WORD OF GOD; The Word Of God; DISOBEDIENCE  to it is to show contempt, treat the LORD as worthless, insignificant, of no value!- “Why did you DESPISE THE WORD OF THE LORD by doing what is evil in His eyes?  “- {2 Samuel 12:9}

2. – DISPLACE THE WORD OF GOD; “They worship Me in vain; THEY TEACH AS DOCTRINES THE PRECEPTS OF MEN.’ You have disregarded the commandment of God to keep the tradition of men.” He went on to say, “You neatly set aside the commandment of God TO MAINTAIN YOUR OWN TRADITION. “-{Mark 7;7-9}

WHY?

Because we DESPISE THE LORD! “…by doing this {evil,} you have shown UTTER CONTEMPT for the LORD, -{2 Sam 12:14}

To”DESPISE THE WORD OF THE LORD … IS TO…. SHOW “…UTTER CONTEMPT FOR THE LORD!”

The “ROOT” of David’s sin problem was his ATTITUDE towards God’s Word and the “FRUIT” was MANIFESTED in his ACT of committing adultery and having her husband killed. The root of every sin problem is our attitude to the Word of God, and to the God of the Word! While we major on the “acts” of his sin, which the Scripture calls evil, we often fail to recognize his attitude that he had which was the “ROOT” of the problem! His attitude towards the Word of God. His attitude ultimately towards the God whose Word it is!  We sin easily when we don’t have respect or value Him or His Word!

WHEN WE HAVE A LIGHT ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE WORD OF GOD WE WILL HAVE A LIGHT ATTITUDE TOWARDS SIN.

Our Attitude towards the Word of God reveals our Attitude towards God and will influence our Actions!

We cannot separate the Word of God from God. As though we can “despise” what He says and claim that we love Him!!

When we Choose to Knowingly Sin, it is because we hold God’s Word as insignificant. despise it, don’t value it because we…do… not… value… God!

“Whoever has My commands and keeps them is the one who loves Me. ” -{John 14:21}- 🙂
