“In the beginning was continuing the Word, and the Word was continuing with God, and the Word was continually God.”- John 1:1
“In the beginning was THE WORD…”
Just as our words explain our minds to others, so the Lord Jesus was sent to explain and express the Mind, thoughts, views of God the Father’s Mind to the world.
” THE WORD “- Thoughts remain invisible and inaudible until they are clothed in words. With words…what we think and feel and are can be known. And as our words REVEAL such things so too, the Lord Jesus, as “THE WORD OF LIFE” clothed and reveals the True thoughts of God and His view and feelings regarding Himself, our Sin and Salvation, and His Character and compassion, His Justice and His Great value of a soul. The Phrase “THE WORD”- “Logos” tends to tie John’s three writings together, the Gospel of John, 1 John and Revelation.
And we read in the Gospel of John, John uses the phrase “THE WORD”- to introduce us to Jesus Christ.
“THE WORD”- Logos used in 4 passages in Scripture here in we see …
1. -THE DEITY -OF JESUS CHRIST.
John 1:1 “In the beginning was THE WORD , and THE WORD was with God and THE WORD was God.”
The word translated “WAS” is a verb that brings the importance of this phrase. Literally it could and should be rendered “WHEN THE BEGINNING BEGAN, THE WORD WAS ALREADY THERE.” This is the sense of “EN”, which is in the imperfect tense and implies CONTINUOUS existence in the past. Before the beginning began, the Word was already in existence. This tantamount to saying that the Word predates time or Creation.
2. -THE HUMANITY – OF JESUS CHRIST
John 1:14 – “And THE WORD became flesh and Dwelt/lived among us”
He was Fully God and Fully man – How could this be?
John shows us in his Gospel
A.- John 4:6 – We see He sat by Jacob’s well near Samaria . BECAUSE WE ARE TOLD He was “wearied with His journey”Along came a woman from a near by town and He asked her for a drink because He was THIRSTY- Further evidence of His Humanity. But within a brief conversation with her He was telling this woman, a complete stranger, all about her guilty past. His supernatural insight evidences His Deity.
B.-In Matthew 8:23-27 – We see Him in Peter’s boat and He was TIRED and Went to SLEEP – Evidences of His Humanity.
Shortly afterwards a storm arose threatening to sink the boat, He awoke and Commanded the howling winds and the Waves to be still and they did – producing an absolute calm, by the Power of HIS Word- proof of His Deity
C. – In John 13:5 we see Him in the Home of Mary and Martha. Their brother, Lazarus had died, and they were grieving. John says that “JESUS WEPT” -John 11:35 and that He “groaned in spirit and was troubled”- evidence of His Humanity. A few minutes later He commanded Dead Lazarus to come back to life- and He did- Evidence of Jesus Deity…
“That Love would never have been realized, unless the Word had embodied a human life, with caresses for little children… tears for broken hearts,….tender pity for the lost,{ He felt Compassion for them-Matt 9… and He wept over Jerusalem…agony unto death for mankind…
“Lift up your eyes and hearts and behold with devout rapture your glorious Lord, uttering the depths , the hidden depths of God”- 1 Cor 2:10,16 F.B. Meyer
Jesus was fully God and Fully Man- The Incarnate God…
“AND DWELT AMONG US” The word “DWELT” or as another translation says, “LIVED” means “TO PITCH A TENT, TO DWELLL TEMPORARILY…. To TABERNACLE AMONG US”
THE Tabernacle in the wilderness had been crowned with the Shecinah glory, so the Lord Jesus carried with Him everywhere the aurora of another world, the Glory of the Father.“The Greek has the verb skenoo from skenem “TENT.” So it literally means “TENTED” among us. The force of this is brought out well in the NIV; “lived for a while among us- only 33 years”- Ralph EARLE.
IN THE OLD TESTAMENT,”THE TENT”-” TABERNACLE” Was THE Centerpiece where God made His Presence Known …standing in the middle of the camp- It symbolized Gods Presence where sinful man could meet God…In Rev 21:3- where the eternal new heavens and earth are described we read “Behold the Dwelling {TENT!} of God with men. He will Dwell {Pitch His Tent} with them , and they shall be His people” … And in John 1:14 -“And the Word was made flesh and Dwelt among us…” The Word “DWELT” – The ETERNAL, Self Existent, Un Created pre Existent One… became Flesh. “He left His usual place and accepted the conditions of human life and environment, with the attendant temporal limitations that all humans experience….
3. -THE REALITY- TESTIFIED TO- OF JESUS CHRIST.
The Word used in 1 John 1:1-2 – “ What was from the Beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning THE WORD OF LIFE…”
4. – THE SUPREMECY OF – JESUS CHRIST
The Word used in Revelation 19:11-16 1 “And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war, His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.
He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His Name is called THE WORD OF GOD. And the armies which are in Heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following on white horses. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty. And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.” – JESUS CHRIST THE WORD OF GOD!!!
5. -THE VICTORY OF – JESUS CHRIST
In Rev 4:1- John gets to Look into Heaven and in Rev 19 – HE SEES a time when Someone is Coming out and it is “THE WORD”- The Victorious…Conquering….Sovereign Word…”
Consider Jesus- The Word- His Deity…His Humanity… His Reality…His Supremacy… His Victory and come let us bow before His person and worship Him in spirit and in Truth for who He is and thank God He has communicated with us through His Son, Jesus the Word made flesh who has dwelt among us- Glory to God!
