Luke 6
Observations;
JESUS IS LORD OF THE SABBATH; – v 1-10
The Pharisees and teachers of the law “were looking for a reason to accuse Him so they watched him closely to see if he would heal on the Sabbath”-(v 7)
“They had set up strict laws regarding how to observe the Sabbath, which included 39 categories of forbidden activities. In essence, these religious leaders had made themselves lords of the Sabbath, thus making themselves lords over the people.
As Creator, Christ was the original Lord of the Sabbath (John 1:3; Hebrews 1:10). He had the authority to overrule the Pharisees’ traditions and regulations because He had created the Sabbath—and the Creator is always greater than the creation. Furthermore, Jesus claimed the authority to correctly interpret the meaning of the Sabbath and all the laws pertaining to it. Because Jesus is Lord of the Sabbath, He is free to do on it and with it whatever He pleases.
As Lord of the Sabbath, Jesus had the right, power, and authority to dispense it in any way He pleased. The Lord of the Sabbath had come, and with His death and resurrection He became the fulfillment of our “Sabbath rest.”-(Gotquestions.com)
Religious people ultimately don’t seek the good welfare of people, they are more interested in people keeping their “laws, rules.”Legalistic people care more about their laws and opinions being followed than God and people’s welfare!
RELIGIOUS LEADERS OPPOSE JESUS- WHAT’S CHANGED!
More interested In Opposing Jesus than caring for people’s welfare! Critical people are opposed to Jesus and uncaring about the compassion He has on people, or their needs!
Jesus in full sight of all heals on the sabbath man with the withered hand Jests heals a man on the sabbath with a withered hand and Pharisees are furious – v 6-10
NOTE;;
Jesus did not succumb to the pressure of the religious leaders. He did not tell the man with a withered hand to come back another day to please the Pharisees and cave ino their pressure. He did not take the man aside and heal him where no one could see so not to offend the Pharisees. He healed him in full view of all including the cruel Pharisees! Wonderful Jesus!
* Faultfinding Pharisees observe Jesus looking to find fault and they did! Not because of His lack of love for people but because of theirs!
FURIOUS FAULTFINDING PHARISEES;
They were furious and discussed what they might do to Jesus. They had no compassion for the man whom Jesus had compassion on they were rule keeper’s not soul weepers-v 11
JESUS SPENT A NIGHT IN PRAYER– v12. Jesus prioritizes time with His Father in prayer- in the midts of busy life, and ministry.
JESUS CHOSE THE TWELVE –v13-16
JESUS WAS POPULAR WITH SOME. Large crowds come to Hear Jesus. Healed by Jesus and were delivered from demons by Jesus – V17-19
JESUS PRONOUNCES 4 BLESSINGS ON PEOPLE. – v 20-22
JESUS GIVES REASON TO REJOICE WHEN REJECTED ON ACCOUNT OF IDENTIFICATION WITH HIM. Rejection, insults are to be expected for the follower of Christ and Jesus gives reasons why you should rejoice! sake -v 22-23
JESUS PRONOUNCES 4 ‘WOE’S” – v 24-26
HOW TO LOVE YOUR ENEMIES – v 27-34
MOTIVATION FOR LOVING YOUR ENEMIES.– through choosing to reflect, mirror your Father in Heaven – v 35-36
JUDGING HARSHLY AND CRITICALLY CONDEMNED – v 37. Note judging is not condemned which speaks of discerning accurately truth from error as compared to Jesus versus the Pharisees, it is the harsh, compassionless, loveless judgment that is condemned for it lacks the love of God as revealed in the Word of God.}
HEART OF GIVING– v 38-
THE BLIND LEADING THE BLIND- THE STUDENT REFLECTS THE TEACHER– v 39-40
JESUS EXPOSES HYPOCRISY.- Speck and plank; Criticising and condemning others- while not seeing log in your own eye is hypocrisy while condemning others, and blind to the unconfessed, unrepented sin in your own life.- v 41-42
LIFE PRODUCES EITHER GOOD OR BAD FRUIT.- Good tree and bad tree compared.
The heart of the problem is exposed and what comes out in our speech regrets what is I. Our heart- v 43-45
WISE AND FOOLISH BUILDERS COMPARED. What you build your life on will ultimately be exposed. One will stand. The other will crumble. Submission to Him and His Word the only solid foundation.
THE FOUNDATION OF WHAT YOU BUILD YOUR LIFE ON WILL DETERMINE YOUR ETERNAL DESTINATION!
The foundation that they built on made the difference, the defining point -V 46-49
SOME APPLICATIONS FROM LUKE 6;
1.- DON’T BE INTIMIDATED BY THOSE WHO LOOK TO FIND FAULT WITH JESUS; THE MAN JESUS Was not intimidated, or influenced. or succumbed to the religious hypocrites with their rules and laws and lack of love seeking to find fault with Jesus. Don’t be intimated by those who look to find fault with Jesus.
2.– DON’T BE A HYPOCRITE; Pay close attention to your own attitudes and actions. It doesn’t mean we are not to help people who are struggling but don’t think you are above sin- the sin they perhaps are struggling with. Gal 6:2 gives great counsel on dealing with others. In gentleness keeping an eye on yourself less you and I fall into the same sin.
3.- CONTINUE TO LOVINGLY DO GOOD; DON’T BE TURNED ASIDE. Jesus continued to love others and reach out to do them good. So too can and must you. Don’t be turned aside
4.- EXPECT REJECTION- A REASON TO REJOICE; Don’t be surprised when You are rejected and suffer for your identification with the LORD Jesus. Rejoice
5.- BE A WISE BUILDER; Jesus defines wisdom and that is to choose to build your life on the Word of God and call others to do likewise. There are only two foundations, the Word of God, and all other foundations are false and lead to destruction- eternally. Don’t be afraid to lovingly point it out to others out of concern for their soul and to encourage followers of Christ to keep being a wise builder!
Hope this may be of encouragement to you!
God Bless
Aidan.
