COUNTDOWN TO CRUCIFICTION.

Days away from crucifixion, God’s plan unfolding. The hatred for Jesus intensifying, yet He still is seeking to lovingly serve others.

Luke 22

1.- PASSOVER APPROACHING -( v1)

2.- WHAT RELIGIOUS LEADERS, SATAN, JUDAS HAVE IN COMMON;

A.- A HATRED OF JESUS!

B.- Religious leaders seek ways to kill Jesus but fear the people.

C- Satan enters Judas;

Result is his turning against Jesus

Lining himself up with those who would oppose Jesus

Takes money to betray Jesus

Looks for an opportunity to do so but away from crowds -( v 2-6)

3.- PASSOVER PREDICTED AND PROVISION;

* Passover first day;

* Jesus predicts where and how to provide provision for disciples to eat together

* And it happened just as He said-(7-13)

4.- JESUS SHARES LAST SUPPER;

A.- Shares His Pleasure at sharing Passover with them.

B.- Shares He Will Suffer.

C.- Shares How to Remember Him

D.- Shares His betrayer is present-( He knew it was Judas- but doesn’t name him before the disciples- gracious)

E.- Shares His Suffering is predetermined!

F.- Share the consequences of the one who betrays Him.

5.- WHO IS THE BETRAYER? The Disciples ask among themselves who is the Betrayer?-(v 14-23)

6.- WHO IS THE GREATEST?

A.- Conversation changed of what Jesus is facing and who is the betrayer to Self Interest. The word “dispute” means “strife,” In the midst of what Jesus was going through they were arguing with one another over who was the greatest among them. Self=absorbed over self-importance!

Self exaltation. The relegation of others to the Selfish desire to be preeminent rather than be a servant

B.- Self-first over Preferring others first! The opposite of Jesus.

C.- What is primary in our hearts eventually leaks out of our mouths and in the disciples case- “who is the greatest,” preeminent among them. Self-interest to the neglect of concern for Jesus! The elevating of self means ultimately the placing of others and even Jesus below you in your or my estimation.

“ I AM THE GREATEST” is the attitude and the desire that others know it and as a result know their place in the pecking order as it were!

7.- GREATNESS IN THE WORLD’S ESTIMATION;

Picture of two groups; those who Dominate others. That is not to characterize the disciples. It’s the opposite of Kingdom thinking and living.-(v25-26)

8.- GREATNESS IN GOD’S ESTIMATION;

Characteristics Of True Greatness;

True greatness is being childlike and a servant -(v26)

9.- JESUS THE MODEL OF GREATNESS TO FOLLOW; He was among them to Serve -(v 27)

10.- SATAN IS NOT IN CONTROL;

He has to get permission from the LORD to seek to sift disciples- v32)

11.- JESUS PRAYS;

He doesn’t “rebuke satan,” but He PRAYS for His own! How comforting Jesus is. Their greatest need is prayer. And He is praying for them, for you!

12.- JESUS KNOWS;

That Peter will fail and tells him so. He is not taken by surprise He is all-knowing! He knows what will happen. What you will do next.

  1. JESUS OFFERS HOPE;

Jesus encouraged Peter that his failure was not final. Jesus gives him Hope. Confident expectation of God bringing forth good,-{Read Rom 8:28}

14.- JESUS RESTORES WITH RESPONSIBILITY;

He doesn’t discard him because of failure! Jesus Imparts him with the assurance he has a future ministry.. as do you, in the lives of strengthening others .-(v 32)

15.- PETER’S MISPLACED CONFIDENCE;

Peter’s boasting, and reliance on self. He doesn’t understand himself.-(v33)

16.- JESUS FORECASTS Peter’s denials.-( v34).

17.- RECAL PAST PROVISIONS OF HIS FAITHFULNESS;

Jesus has Disciples recall past provisions of how He has met them and gives future instructions -(v35-36)

18.- JESUS DEATH IS NOT AN ACCIDENT BUT FULFILMENT OF SCRIPTURE. -(v37-38)

19.- JESUS PRAYS IN MOUNT OF OLIVES; -( v 39-46)

A.-Asks disciples to pray

  1. -Warns them specifically to pray that they would not fall into temptation

C.- Jesus asks the Father if there is another way

D.- Jesus submits His will to the Father’s will. Ultimately true prayer is taken up with God being glorified and submitting your will to the will of God. True prayer is not trying to bend God to do your will, but submitting your will to do His.

E.- Jesus needed strengthening; Ange was sent to do so.

F.- Jesus emotional anguish; sweat as were great drops of blood -(v44)

20.- JESUS FINDS DISCIPLES ASLEEP; exhausted -(v45)

21.- PRAY LEST YOU BE TEMPTED;

Jesus tells them a second time to pray lest they fall into temptation. He takes time to REMIND them again so serious the possibility of temptation.-(v45-46)

22.- JESUS ARRESTED.-(v 47-53)

23.- PETER DENIES JESUS:

As Jesus Predicted–(v 54-62)

24.- JESUS MOCKED AND BEATEN BY GUARDS.-(v 63-65)

25.- JESUS BEFORE PILATE AND HEROD

-( v 66-71)

God bless and encourage you
