“and all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, for God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble. 6 Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, 7 casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you. “-{1 Peter 5:5-7}
God Hates Pride;
“There are six things which the Lord hates, Yes, seven which are an abomination to Him: 17 Haughty eyes,a lying tongue, And hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that run rapidly to evil, A false witness who utters lies, And one who spreads strife among brothers. ” -{Prov 6:16-17}. “Haughty eyes” speaks of pride and the Lord hates it! ” “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;
Pride and arrogance and the evil way And the perverted mouth, I hate. “-{Prov 8:13}. We see satan’s sin was Pride. ““How you have fallen from heaven, O star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, You who have weakened the nations! “But you said in your heart, ‘I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God, And I will sit on the mount of assembly In the recesses of the north. 14 ‘I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.’ “Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol,To the recesses of the pit.”-{Isaiah 14:12-15}. God hates pride.
In this passage in 1 Peter 5:6-7 we see “God Is Opposed To The Proud.”- The word “Opposed” or as some translations say,”Resisted,” it was a military term and used to describe an army that was arrayed against enemy forces, it means “to be an enemy of ” or “to resist with assembled forces, “it is to be opposed, resist, hostile towards. It is in the present tense which means this is God’s continual attitude toward the proud! The idea is that God continually sets Himself against,” the proud! The word “antitasso” -“Opposed,” means to arrange in battle order to line oneself up against. As Kenneth Wuest says The word “resisteth” in the Greek is a military term, used of an army drawn up for battle. Pride calls out God’s armies. God sets Himself in array against the proud person.
The word “Proud” in v 6 means???/
P- Personal
R- Rejection of God and Repulsive to God
I-Independent of God and Inconsiderate of others
D- Depraved
E- Ego
” Resists: “The verb vividly pictures God as one who places Himself in battle array against such individuals.” (Hiebert) ii. Grace and pride are eternal enemies. Pride demands that God bless me in light of what I think I deserve. Grace deals with me on the basis what is in God, not on the basis of anything in me. iii. “Pride is one of the most detestable of sins; yet does it find lodgment in earnest souls, though we often speak of it by some lighter name. We call it – independence, self-reliance. We do not always discern it in the hurt feeling, which retires into itself, and nurses its sorrows in a sulk… We are proud of our humility, vain of our meekness; and, putting on the saintliest look, we wonder whether all around are not admiring us for our lowliness.” (Meyer) iv. “If you are willing to be nothing God will make something of you. The way to the top of the ladder is to begin at the lowest round. In fact in the church of God, the way up is to go down; but he that is ambitious to be at the top will find himself before long at the bottom.” (Spurgeon)
God HATES Pride. God is OPPOSED to the proud!
” Proud (5244) (huperephanos [word study] from hupér = over, above, + phaíno = shine) is the haughty person pictured with his head held high above others.
Huperephanos designates the man who, from a feeling of his own superiority, regards others with haughtiness. It describes persons puffed up with a high opinion of themselves, and regarding others with contempt, as if they were unworthy of any intercourse with them.
Vincent writes that huperephanos is derived From huper = above, and phainesthai = to show one’s self… It is the sin of an uplifted heart against God and man. Compare Pr. 16:5; Ro 12:16 (mind not high things); 1 Ti 3:6.
Barclay adds that huperephanos literally means one who shows himself above other people. Even the Greeks hated this pride. Theophrastus described it as “a certain contempt for all other people.” Theophylact, the Christian writer, called it “the citadel and summit of all evils.” The real terror of this pride is that it is a thing of the heart. It certainly means haughtiness, but the man who suffers from it might well appear to be walking in downcast humility, while all the time there was in his heart a vast contempt for all his fellow-men. This pride shuts itself off from God for three reasons. (i) It does not know its own need. … It walks in proud self-sufficiency. (ii) It cherishes its own independence. It will be beholden to no man; it will not even be beholden to God. … (iii) It does not recognize its own sin. … A pride like that cannot receive help, because it does not know that it needs help, and, therefore, it cannot ask. It loves, not God, but itself.” (Barclay, W: The Daily Study Bible Series. The Westminster Press) ”
4 REASONS Why God hates Pride.. v6-7
God is OPPOSED Because…
1.– PRIDE REFUSES TO COME “UNDER” THE AUTHORITY OF GOD! Pride refuses to Submit and come “UNDER” the authority of the Sovereignty of God. Pharaoh would not come “Under ” the Mighty hand of God and said “Who is the LORD that I should obey Him?” and the futility of pride is seen in the end , when his army was drowned at the Red Sea!
The phrase,” the mighty hand of God,” was used to speak of His Presence and Sovereign Power in Scripture. It was used to speak of His Creative, delivering, saving, correcting, Sovereign Power. Pride says “No” to God, refusing and rebelling against Him, His Word, his will and way. In Romans 1 the people refused to come “Under ” His authority choosing instead to suppress the truth, exchanging worship of the creation rather than the Creator and the result was to spiral down into sin. The rich young ruler asked Jesus the right question, “What must I do to?? eternal life” and Jesus told him, what was needed but he choose he would not come “Under” the authority, Sovereign Power of God! Those in John 6 who desired Jesus for what He could do for them rather than who he is walked away unwilling o come “UNDER” his authority, Pride REFUSES to come “UNDER the Mighty Hand of God,” His Sovereign. The last five letters in Sovereign spell R-E-I-G-N, that speaks of His Rule, and Pride Refuses to submit to The King! PRIDE REBELS against God Dishonors His Mighty -Pride opposes His Mighty Hand- it does not want to come “Under the Mighty Hand of God.” Pride will not bow in submission, but stands erect in rebellion and defiance inflated by self importance and deceived wickedly by its sin, which blinds and binds the proud.
God is OPPOSED Because…
2. – PRIDE WON’T BE LIFTED UP BY GOD- FORFEITS PROMISED DELIVERANCE. God promises the Humble will be “exalted…lifted up… in the proper time,…due time.” For in the end the “proud” are not “Lifted up… Exalted.” In the end they will be destroyed, they will not be lifted up, exalted, it is tragic. Pride Destroys in the end!
God is OPPOSED Because…
3.-PRIDE IS FUELED BY ANXIETY – REFUSES TO TRUST GOD’S PROVISION FOR THEIR ANXIETY. -ROBS OF PEACE. The Proud are eaten up with Anxiety because they will not submit and Come UNDER the Mighty hand of God! ‘One reason for Humbling ourselves is to take care of anxiety. PRIDE says, ” No- I will carry my anxieties, I am sufficient, and they have no peace” an evidence of Pride. “Casting all your anxieties on Him.” One expression of Humility is that God undertakes with His Mighty Hand to Undertake for our anxieties. For the humble person says, “I cant carry my anxieties, they are too much for me to carry, I am not sufficient, or able I need You LORD to undertake as You alone are Sufficient, So i give them all the whole of them to You!” Humility knows itself and the inability and need of God to carry them all, and says “LORD, I need You, I need You to take these anxieties off of me.” them. Pride says “No, I’ll take care of it, i can work this out, i’ll find away to deal with it.”Pride feels self sufficient, and in no need of God. Since Pride will not come “UNDER” His Mighty Hand” pride sees no reason, has no wisdom to know that Anxieties rob of peace and they will have no peace as along as they refuse to exalt itself and relegate God in the equation! The word “anxieties” means to “divide the mind” to pull it in different ways, it causes stress and fear and anxiety always travel together as Luke 12 sows. Pride refuses God’s Mighty Powers Help and is robbed of Peace. God promises that those who handle anxiety His way, will experience “the PEACE OF ” who ? the world? the Proud? No” but “the PEACE OF GOD…” and he promises, ” which surpasses all understanding will guard your heart and mind in Christ.”-{Phil 4;6-7}. Pride will not let God carry it, pride says I can carry my own anxieties…. God hates Pride because it ruins peoples peace, If we insist on carrying pride we will be crushed and ruined and God” Pride would rather carry their anxieties than come under the Mighty Hand of God and experience His deliverance from anxiety that crush’s the soul tears at the mind, divided, pulling it in different directions and is devoid of peace.
God is OPPOSED, Because…
4. – PRIDE REJECTS the CARE OF GOD. ” for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”- {Matthew 5:45}. We see the Father’s universal Care as evident in creation, where all benefit and see His goodness. But the proud does not acknowledge or see God in action … But in this passage in 1 Peter 5:5-6 for the “anxious,” the word means “to dived the mind,” to have it pulled in different ways, and this is the temptation, Why is this so serious, apart from the stress, turmoil, fear that often accompanies it? Luke 10:27, where Jesus answered what was the greatest commandment, He replied,” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.'” Note the purpose of our minds? To LOVE God with!! And so anxieties goal is to divide the mind, distract from devotion to loving Him with our thinking! And to “think” right we have to “renew” our thinking, and this is through God’s Word which is true, and transforming -{Rom 12:2; John 17:17;. But the proud mind is at enmity with God!-{Read Romans 5:10}.
But for the follower of the LORD, the suffering ones can know that for the humble ones “UNDER the Mighty Hand of God,” can be assured and derive comfort that even in difficult times , suffering, severe trials that He provides for them and personally cares, passionately, and persistently so!
And He shows this in the Scripture many times over and over. Remember when Stephen was being stoned to death? -{Acts 7:54-8:2}. We read Jesus STOOD… up from His throne, {v 56}. He was watching and so moved…He cares…. why did He not intervene? He was working out His will… a young man who was proud and who gave “hearty approval” to the stoning -{Acts 8:1} }… God would save Him and use him… and he would become the apostle Paul… God would care for Stephen and take Him Home to be with Him! And He would care for you And me to have someone share the Gospel with us, and to cause us too be born again to a living hope…{Read 1 Peter 1:3} We read of Hagar in the desert having been rejected, yet she was not unseen to the LORD of Heaven and earth… The LORD shows up, because He cares for her… when others rejected her… HE CARED about her!… The woman at the well… He cared for her soul, He said “I must go through Samaria”… and He did for her soul, her eternal welfare…. The man who was controlled by demons and was put in chains so violent was he … the LORD went to Him and clothed him in his right mind.. because He cared for him!
The praetorian guards at Philippi were recipients of God’s care, as He had Paul share the Gospel in prison with them. In Ephesians 3:1 Paul said, “I Paul the prisoner of Christ for the sake of …YOU, Gentiles,” Paul saw he was there with Divine assignment, because God CARED…!
Elihad running away and Elisha came to say he would got with him… bu he rejected… od had elisha come along and offer hsi comajnionship -{because He cared… but even in the cave He came to Him because He cared…. it is fuundemanlt and foundational truth God cares for you andworks LLL things together for good to those who love Him and are the called. And whoa re those who Love Him? tHOSE WHO HAVE AND DO SUBMIT AND COME under hIS rULE EXPERIENCE AND ARE RECIOIRANTS OF hIS PERSONAL care!!!
He cares when it seems no one else does. His care is continous….
God’s personal… God hates Pride because it robs us of God’s sweetest experiences of God’s care. God cares for you when you cast your anxieties on Him. Humility comes “UNDER” HIS MIGHTY HAND” and finds His Infinite Care. His personal, persistent care for the humble, But not the proud, because the Proud reject His care!
So where do we begin when we see this is us?
We acknolege we are proud, conceited, arrogant with an attitude at times that feels we are superior and others are inferior to us and we confess our sin to God and that is humbling ourself and we submit to His Mighty Right Hand and come UNDER His authorty whch is by the power of His Spirit applying, obeying His Word…. now we are beginign right with God and will be evidenced in treating others with respect and regards for them! We don’t have to stay proud when God has made the alternative to repent and submit UNDER His Authoriyty and receive Grace,,,, and can cast our anxities upon Him… and His Care!
