“…who gave Himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people that are His very own, eager to do what is good.” –{Titus 2:14.}

Jesus gave Himself to redeem us…” NOTE the two reasons He gives here

A.- “REDEEM US FROM WICKEDNESS.”-

That is the negative-Sin…but look what is to fill that void, so he is not saying, nor are we to say, ” don’t do wickedness, don’t do wickedness…” and that is the end in itself, ‘But God…” loves and wants others to be blessed and part of that is..

B.- “…EAGER TO DO WHAT IS GOOD.”
‘Eager,”- “Zealous, DEVOTED….” –

“Neither God nor humans are cold, unfeeling beings. Persons have emotions as well as intellect and will, and often these emotions are strong. To be zealous describes one of the stronger emotions. Zelotes describes one who is one stirred to action by a strong emotion. Zeal thus describes an intense emotion which compels one to action. One who is zealous manifests an energetic, unflagging pursuit of an aim or devotion to a cause, in this casegood deeds“. We are to be eagerly desirous to perform good deeds, veritable “zealots (albeit Spirit-controlled) for good works.” -{preceptaustin commentaries}

They must be on the front foot to be awake spiritually, observing, in light of what Jesus has done for them… they are free to BE DOER’S OF God’s will , which in this passage is “TO DO GOOD…” says He not only Redeemed us FROM….. but TO… LEARNING TO DO GOOD! But note, it is not happenchance, or a cold indifference, but “EAGER…”- Zealous, READY… this is their attitude to adopted and maintained.

 Good deeds are done out of a heart of love from God… for God and  love for Others! Indeed it is the first and Greatest command in Action! “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ “-{Matt 22:37-39}

“And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.”-{Hebrews 13:16}

If you want a good study, read Titus underlining the times ‘good works, deed’s are mentioned and what ATTITUDE the people are to develop and then ACT UPON.

Good deeds are such things that no man is saved for them nor without them. – Thomas Adams
