HOPE STABILIZES AND IS OUR SECURITY –

And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise. For men swear by one greater than themselves, and with them an oath given as confirmation is an end of every dispute. In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath, so that by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have taken refuge would have strong encouragement to take hold of the hope set before us. This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, a hope both sure and steadfast and one which enters within the veil, where Jesus has entered as a forerunner for us, having become a high priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.{Hebrews 6:15-20}.

God wants us to be encouraged and have “hope” -the confident assurance that what He promises He will fulfill, and our future is in His hands for our eternal good, the assurance of our salvation! -{Heb 6:13-18}.

“HOPE” means “confident expectation,” trust that what God promises He will do. It is the hope of certainty based on His character, His Word, of future good.

Two unchangeable things;

The Word of His Promise and the Oath that confirms that Promise. God never lies He always keeps His promise and never breaks His Oath. God is not human, that He should lie, not a human being, that He should change His mind. Does He speak and then not act? Does He promise and not fulfill?” -{Numbers 23:19}.

His unchangeable Word, Promise, should be enough but He doubles down as it were, confirming His promise with His unchangeable Oath so that “we who have fled for refuge,” may be motivated and cling to our Hope. God also promised and gave an oath to Abraham.”For when God made the promise to Abraham since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself,  saying, “I will surely bless you and I will surely multiply you.” And so, having patiently waited, he obtained the promise.“-{Hebrews 6:13-15}. God wants these dear believers to persevere in Hebrews and gives them not only a promise but His oath, and pledge, He puts His Deity behind the promise, and He cannot lie so that they may know, and have the assurance that their salvation is guaranteed and they they are to keep going by faith knowing they will receive the fulfillment of what God has promised, and pledged, their salvation is guaranteed for each of them!

“In the same way God, desiring even more to show to the heirs of the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose, interposed with an oath,”-{Heb 6:17}.

He wants to show the “heirs of promise,”- an “heir” not by natural birth but by the “new birth” are loving, gracious recipients. God has chosen them to be “heirs,” and He gives them a promise but sometimes because of the doubts that arise in the mind, He assures us that He has committed His oath, and His purpose, and desire, is that we have “strong encouragement,” comfort. He gives His oath, pledge, to affirm and confirm His promise, and this an act of Sovereign love to encourage His own, that He’s got it, He can be trusted! Their salvation is guaranteed, it is irrevocable, unchanging, secure, and based on God’s Promise, His oath, and pledge, through the sufficient work of His Son, the LORD Jesus.

“We may have”{echo} is in the present tense, in that God wants His people to have continual encouragement in this matter.”Strong” speaks of indwelling strength and was used of an army or fortress that was used to speak of an obstacle of “strong resistance.” And so God gives us the inner strength so we can resist doubts, discouragement, and the onslaughts of the evil one, and those whom he would use. The word “encouragement” speaks of comfort, and consolation… and comes from the assurance of faith and help from His Promises to us. It gives us strength and comforts our fears, sorrows, and doubts…Through His promise and oath, His character, He wants us to be encouraged and have hope.

“Who have fled for Refuge.”– Speaks of those who have fled away to a place of refuge, and safety. For the follower of Christ, we have fled from sin to the Refuge, the safety of Jesus our High Priest who has offered His life as a sacrifice for our sin.

Refuge” speaks of safety and security from the danger that has pursued us.  In The Old Testament, Numbers 35:11-13 and Joshua 20 speak of “cities of refuge” that God had provided for the person who was guilty of manslaughter and could flee and find safety in from the avenger who sought his death. These cities were set up and provided hope for the one fleeing, knowing if he could make it to one of those designated cities he would find safety, and security. These cities were a spiritual picture for us sinners, who fleeing from sin, the wrath of God to Jesus find hope, security, safety, and eternal protection in Him. Just as the people who made it into the cities of refuge were safe, so we who have fled to Jesus and “In Christ” find eternal safety, security, and protection. Just as the people in their houses who had put the blood on the sides and tops of the door-frames of the houses, and when the death angel passed over it they were safe, secure under the blood! ” For I will go through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgments—I am the Lord.  The blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you live; and when I see the blood I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt.“-{Exodus 12:7,12-13}. Note, “When I see the Blood, I will pass over it.” Their safety and deliverance depended on Him! And He kept His Word.

As we flee to Jesus, who is our “Refuge” under His purchasing and protective blood shed for us which we have been redeemed through His blood.

  • It is Powerful Blood;In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”-{Eph 1:7}.
  • It is Precious Blood; For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. “-{1 Peter 1:18-19}.

Through Him, we are eternally safe from the penalty of sin, the wrath of God, and the bondage, control, and authority of satan! Just as Noah and his family were safe, and secure, from the wrath of God in the Ark, so too we “In Christ” our “Ark” are safe, from the penalty of sin, the wrath of God, and the control of satan. What a “Refuge” for all believers is The LORD Jesus Christ! Our Salvation is securely based on His Promise, His pledge.

  • ” This means that we must battle discouragement by taking hold by faith of God’s promise to save all who take refuge in Christ. God’s promise and His oath are two strong motivating forces to encourage us to grab onto the hope set before us and don’t let go. Then that hope becomes an anchor for our souls.”-{Steven Cole,}

We are safe in this place of “REFUGE.” He wants us to “lay hold” of, to count on it, this blessed assurance! The assurance and reason for “strong encouragement” and hope is the promise of this future blessing that we have a sure, secure, eternal future based not on what you “feel”- subjective, but on the objective character and promise of God! This is our “Anchor” and what we are to “lay hold of.”

Our “Anchor” speaks of that which secures the ship amidst raging storms and being swept away by waves or winds. “Anchors” were often carried by sailors away from the ship and anchored it on a reef, shore, or dock, securing it, and fastening it on there. Just as an “anchor” is not in the same place as the ship, neither is our “anchor “of hope in this world but in the LORD Jesus, in the “heavenlies” where we are to set our affections. {Read Col 3:1-3}.

“STORMS,” That Threaten To Shipwreck Our Hope “In Christ.”

1The Believer will encounter various “Storms” in their lives including the “storms” that seek to DIVERT the believers off course through FALSE DOCTRINE, TEACHING.{Eph 4:14; Col 2:4,8}. His Word is Truth and we gauge all teaching through what His Word says as the final authority.-{Read 2 Timothy 2:15}. Also, the truth is that salvation is by grace through faith alone, in Christ alone.-{Eph 2:8-9}.

2. The Believer may encounter the “Storms” of DOUBTS about God, His Goodness, as the evil one tempted Adam and Eve and His Word.” Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”-{Gen 3:1}. The evil one seeks to tempt him to doubt God and what He says. Doubt His goodness, Doubt He can be trusted, Doubt He means what He says. The attack is on His character and Word!  Jesus experienced the same attack but responded with “it is written, it is written, it is written” in Matthew 4. He kept referring to the authority of Scripture. Paul also spoke of the temptation in Colossians of the attack on the Sufficiency of Christ, and therefore their salvation. So the evil one seeks to tempt us with a thought, and if not rejected but embraced begins to worm away in our thinking creating doubts that ultimately seek to doubt and dishonor God! And doubting causes us to be double-minded and “being double-minded {doubting, hesitant,} man, is unstable in all his ways.”-{James 1:8}. Doubting leads to spiritual instability!

We go back to what He says and take Him at His Word, for His Word is Truth.-{John 17:17}; The “Anchor” of  our Hope, is our Resurrected LORD -{ Read 1 Cor 15:1-19}

3. The Believer may encounter the “Storms” of DISCOURAGEMENT, as Joshua was warned against {Joshua 1:9} and Nehemiah encountered -{read Nehemiah 6:9}. Nehemiah says they “tried to make me fearful in order to discourage me that the work might stop.” {Nehemiah 6:9}. Note the order, fear, discouragement…quit… stop doing His Work! Discouragement is to take courage out of someone, to lose heart!

4. The Believer will encounter the “Storms” of DIFFICULT TRIALS and the assurance of His Love will sustain us-{Romans 8;38-39} and the reality that His purposes in trials are not to destroy us but develop us, display Himself to and through us. He is at work to produce perseverance and spiritual maturity, and give us wisdom and opportunities to love Him as we choose to persevere.- {Read James 1:2-5,12}

5. The Believer will encounter “Storms,” of DEMONIC DECEIT, LIES, about God, who you are “in Christ, “the world’s system, His Word…he is opposed to the truth for “If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine; and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” -{Read John 8:31-32}. It is a battle of lies versus truth, “But God has made provision and His WORD is our weapon applied by His Spirit,” for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh, but divinely powerful for the destruction of fortresses. We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,”-{2 Cor 10:4-5}.

6. The Believer may be tested in the “Storms” of DEFEAT, through some sin yielded to. But our Hope is His promise who is Faithful and Just to continually cleanse us from all unrighteousness. – {Read 1 John 1:9}. We can be restored. Our failure is not final because of Him who is faithful. We have an “Anchor” for whatever “the storm!” He assures us, “For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.”-{Phil 1;6}. The assurance that what He begins, He continues and will finish, bringing it to conclusion, our salvation! We have an “ANCHOR,” for our souls!

This “anchor” we have for our soul is sure, secure, certain of the promise of our future because on the fact that the LORD Jesus has secured it for us, purchased it, suffered for us to have it, and pleads our case before the Father not that we might “hope” as a “maybe” or “wish so” without certainty, but the objective assurance our future hope is a certainty, secured, having been signed, sealed and will be delivered through His merit, blood, and resurrection! So when or if doubts attack your mind, turn to the truth of His Word, His Promise, His Pledge, and His Son!

It is an Objective Hope based on the promise, oath of God, and the High Priesthood of the LORD Jesus.

Our Salvation is secure because of His Promise and unchanging Purpose!

Our “Anchor” is fastened to the LORD Himself. The LORD Jesus has “anchored” our hope of “refuge” in the very presence of God.

He is Someone to look forward to!

“Yes, we are fully confident, and we would rather be away from these earthly bodies, for then we will be at home with the Lord.”-{2 Cor 5;8}. “Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a place for you. If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. “-{John 14:1-3}.“Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, we will be like Him, because we will see Him just as He is. And everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.”-{1 John 3:1-3}.

SURE– {Asphales}- literally means it cannot be thrown down, tripped up, overthrown. It means, secure unshakable, and immovable. It is speaking of something which is secure and safe from stumbling or falling. Figuratively it is referring to that which is secure and can be relied on and confided in.

STEADFAST“-{Bebaios}- Speaks of “sustaining one’s steps in going.” It describes something that is unwavering, persistent, and can be relied on as dependent. Figuratively it means something that can be built upon, rely or trust. “Bebaios” speaks of something which does not break down under the weight of something that steps on it. This hope which the believing soul has in the Lord Jesus is an anchor of the soul which cannot be made to totter nor break down when put under stress and strain.”-{Wuest.} The word has a legal sense in guaranteeing, like a warranty in today’s society!

In the midst of great sufferings and difficulties, with some of the people’s faith vacillating God wants them to be fully assured that they have a guaranteed future hope in the LORD Jesus, their salvation is secure, He assures them and wants to strengthen their faith!

Our salvation is secure.

Our Hope of salvation is certain Because God cannot Lie

 Our Hope of salvation is certain because God’s Promise and Purpose is Unchangeable!

 Our Hope of salvation is certain for all who have fled to Jesus as their “Refuge”

 This is meant to assure us in present difficulties we have an Anchor for the trials, a Future Hope, guaranteed, pledged, promised by God, that cannot be overthrown and is Steadfast! We may have “confident expectation,” regards our salvation in the LORD who has promised us!

He will finish what He has begun. Our salvation is secure. God has given us His Promise and His Oath and that all who have fled to Jesus as our Refuge are guaranteed of eternal safety and salvation. We have an “Anchor”for the soul!-{Read 1 Peter 1:5}

The Word of His Promise and the Oath that confirms that Promise. God never lies He always keeps His promise and never breaks His Oath.
