“{Behold} See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are.”-{1 John 3:1}

Some translations say “Behold” or “See”-the word is in the “aorist imperative” which is a command calling the readers to give immediate attention to. The idea is to …STOP everything else, put the brakes on! This is Urgent! You need to consider, contemplate, and give your full attention to this. Ponder the significance of it!

What is so urgent? He wants them to consider, not with a glance but to stop all else and look long, think, consider long and hard, meditate and give yourself to this and understand, “How GREAT a love the Father has bestowed on us.” It is also an exclamation which speaks of being astonished!

The word that is translated, “How Great” literally is “what kind,”Originally it meant “Of what country” and always implies astonishment – a wow! It’s as if John is saying, where does this love come from, it’s from an other place, because there is nothing like this on earth…. it is Heavenly!

Astonished by the Love of the Father! And wants them and us to Consider the Great love God the Father has initiated, Gifted, lavished upon you, which is plural, it is for all His, and is also personal, individually tailored and dispensed lavishly… to what end? “That we should be called children of God and such we are!”

But are we not “all “God’s children?” No! 1 John 3:10 writes, of two spiritual families, “the children of God” and “the children of the devil.” All are created by God but there are two different spiritual families. When we are “born again” into God’s family He becomes our FATHER and we are commanded, to urgently give attention to the LOVE the Father Has Lavished, gifted us, that we should be called “children of God and such we are!” -{Read 1 Peter 1:3}.

The assurance He gives us that we are His beloved children and it is a fact- “and such we are.” Let there be no doubting His Love, His work or whose you are! God is no longer your Judge but your Father-{Read Rom 5:1; 8:1} . We are Who He says we are because of what He has done for us that He would cause us to be “born again” and become our Loving Heavenly Father! SAY what He says about you and only what HE says about you and think, think, think often on the Great Love the Father has lavished upon you, that you are a child of God and not alone you are in the family of God!

Ask Him to open up the eyes of your heart to help you understand this Other world Love, the Great Love of the FATHER to you, that you are now and always will be His child.

As the command says, STOP, THIS IS URGENT… Consider this …. the Love of the Father for you and that you are in His family as His child by His doing! You are loved by the Great Love of God the Father through the great loving sacrifice of the LORD Jesus! And the Holy Spirit, your Residing Teacher will help you understand more and more through using His Word.

“BESTOWED” What a beautiful word it means “GIVEN.” It is not inherited passed down from family to family, It is not earned, It cannot be bought it is GIFTED by GOD the FATHER. it should produce humility in us that we by His grace should GIFT those whom Romans 5 describes as “helpless, ungodly, sinners, enemies” that we who once were rebels against GOD SHOULD BY HIS GIFT now be Children of God and He to make Himself unashamedly known as our “Father!” No boasting in us only us BOASTING IN Him! -{Read Jer 9:24, Eph 2:8-9}.

  • God has Gifted you family entrance and membership and all the privileges!
  • ·And the Greatest is He takes responsibility to be your Father and that with Great love for you! Think much on that!

Our Understanding of The Love of The Father should grow greater, influencing our thinking and controlling our conduct to be a people who love and are known by “this all men will know you are My Disciples by your Love for one another.”-John 13:34–{Read 2 Cor 5:14 ; Gal 2:20; 1 Cor 13:4-7; 1 John 3:16-18}. And the more we give to thinking on Him and His great love and asking Him to help us understand it, more and more, He will.

When is the last time you have stopped and considered the Great love the Father has for you and that He has made you His child and He is your Father? Maybe it’s time…?

How about reading and memorizing and meditating 1 John 3:1 and asking God to help you know more and more His great love for you.
